John Elder is born on March 8, 1824. The Scottish marine engineer advanced the compound steam marine engine, greatly improving fuel efficiency and accelerating the technological progress of nineteenth-century steamship design.

9. 1836

Sir Michael Foster is born on March 8, 1836. A major English physiologist and reformer of science education, he promoted laboratory-based teaching, founded Cambridge’s Physiology Department, and helped set modern standards for physiological research.
